BIRDS and TREES Between 2000 and 3000 meters of altitude.
High mountains or cold lands.
Alta montaña o tierra fría.
Colombia is privileged with its three mountain ranges, which seem in an open competition of beauty, with its slopes and escarpments, nuanced with savannas and plains. Amazing landscapes that only arouse admiration. It is impossible to overlook the beauty of the Cundi-Boyacense savanna, the Nariño or Antioquia highlands, just to mention a few. Large cities such as Bogotá, the capital of the country and other prominent municipalities settle there.
The high mountain is recognized by the forests of “robles”, “chaquiros”,”encenillos”, “palmas de cera”, “arrayanes”, and “siete cueros”, among many other species.
In the cold land, the forests of fog are also frequent; in them, the vegetation remains under the mist at least three quarters of the year. The trees are always soaked and bear on their branches and trunks a great variety of epiphytic species such as bromeliads and mosses, which trap the water that forms the fog with their foliage. Then, slowly, the water drains to the ground giving rise to springs and streams, which enrich more and more those that come from the paramos, giving Colombia a special water richness and a contribution to the undisputed landscape.
The high mountain is the habitat of the wax palm (Ceroxylon quindiuense), although it can be found above 3000 meters of altitude. The element that highlights this species in the botanical world is its great height, with records up to 60 m. This figure has not been matched by any other palm. Its majesty has not gone unnoticed and had stood out since the explorations of Humboldt and Bonpland. Only in 1985, it was declared as the national tree of Colombia.
